DIY - Self paced approach
I consider this like having a good pen light. It's bright and effective if you use it correctly. At a distance it can be difficult to see much due to the small beam but does help, likely you need to move it back and forth to get a good view at a distance. That said if it's off target even a little it won't work. And you don't get much perspective. The oddities in the image are part and parcel of DIY. Sometimes it works great, others not so much.

I would suggest this is like a lantern. It offers a broader area of coverage around you, than the pen light, but fades out the further it extends. You can effectively turn and walk in pretty much any direction because you already have your bearings. That's the key, getting perspective. As you move, the edge of the light uncovers more. So you may not have perfect clarity past a point but as you move forward you the light reaches new areas.

You ask the consultant to help you with a particular problem. That is like having someone come and put in path lighting. For one particular path it's clear, you are free to look around, you don't have to carry anything, just follow the path. But stepping off the path maybe problematic.

They learn all about you, your data, your process, etc. This is like someone putting in street lights and flood lights. There may be random dark spots but for the path you usually travel its clear and easy. As you can imagine this is the most intensive and the most impactful. You'd want to know you were going to be there a while, or that it adds resale value, to ensure return on your investment
